Description

Armor Plate 700 is a thermosetting vinylester, medium viscosity, flexible resin. AP 700 is idea for use in chemical plants and paper mills, where it can be used as:

  • lining in neutralization pits & tanks
  • a chemical resistant lining for steel and concrete
  • a pipe repair material
  • a coating for fiberglass reinforcements
  • a fixation and saturation material for fiberglass reinforcements

Chemical Resistance

Armor Plate 700 has exceptional chemical resistance to water and steam. It is also resistant to alkalies and bleaches. Contact the Wil-Cor, Inc. Technical Department for chemical resistance in specific service conditions.

Installation Recommendation

Wil-Cor, Inc. recommends supervision by Wil-Cor or that this product be installed by experienced fiberglass installers. Preparation, mixing and application information is provided for installers with adequate installation experience.

Mixing

Mix resin (part A) and catalyst (part B) at the job site, immediately prior to application. The pot life of the catalyzed resin is very short (10 to 15 min.), so only mix quantities that can be used during a 10 min. period.

The mixing ratio of Resin : Catalyst will vary with temperature. The catalyst is Armor Plate 60, methyl ethyl ketone peroxide. Use 1.5 to 2 oz. of catalyst for each gallon of resin.

More catalyst is needed at lower temperatures, less is needed at high temperatures. The pot life can be extended by using less catalyst.

Mix a wax additive (1 oz./gal.) with the top coat of Armor Plate 700 resin. The wax additive will prevent air inhibition and allow a proper cure for the top coat. Use wax ONLY in the top coat.

Surface Preparation

A clean surface is necessary to properly apply the Armor Plate 700. Remove dirt, oil and other contaminants by sandblastiing or other mechanical methods. All surfaces must be dry before AP 700 is applied.

Application

Armor Plate 700 is applied by bristle brush with unpainted handle, squeegee, or long nap roller. Armor Clean may be used to clean equipment, but not for personal cleanup.

Allow the coating to cure for approximately 12 hours before placing in service. If it takes more than 4 or 5 hours for the applied resin to set, increase the catalyst, but DO NOT use more than 2 oz. per gallon.

The following factors affect the cure of thermosetting resins such as Armor Plate 700:

  • 1The resin temperature, the ambient temperature, and the temperature of the surface to which the resin is applied – lower temperatures lengthen the cure time
  • 2The coating thickness – thin resin films cure more slowly than thicker resin films.
  • 3The humidity – high humidity slows the cure of resin exposed to the atmosphere.

Packaging

AP 700 resin is available in 1-qt., 1-gal., 5-gal. and 55 gal. and AP 60 Catalyst is available in 2-oz. and 1 gal.

Coverage and Estimating

The theoretical coverage of the Armor Plate 700 when used as:

AP 700 Primer 125-150 sq. ft./gal. (Depends on surface roughness)
AP 700 Saturating Coat 25 sq. ft./gal. (Per laminate of 1.5 oz. chopped strand mat)
AP 700 Top Coat 125-150 sq. ft./gal.

Shelf Life

The expected shelf life of the Armor Plate 700 components in storage is 1 to 3 months if sealed tightly at temperatures around 75 °F.

Resin Component

  • Causes eye or skin irritation. Always wear suitable clothing to minimize skin Contact.
  • Vapor caused headache, dizziness, nausea and unconsciousness. Area must be ventilated. If inhaled, remove victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if not breathing.
  • For eye Contact, flush with water immediately.
  • For skin Contact, wash with soap and water immediately. Remove contaminated clothing.
  • If swallowed, give large amounts of milk or water to drink and seek immediate medical attention.
  • Flammable. Keep away from all sparks, flames or heat. Extinguish fires with foam, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or water spray.

Hardener – AP 60 (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide)

  • Store in a cool place away from all sources of heat.
  • NEVER store near cobalt naphthenate or other promotors, accelerators or strong reducing agents.
  • Strong irritant. Ingestion can be fatal. If swallowed, induce vomiting and call physician.
  • For eye contact, flush with water for 30 minutes and call physician immediately.
  • For skin contact, wash with soap and water immediately. Remove contaminated clothing.
